Josh brought us his very low mileage 2015 Subaru STI back in January of 2016 for basic bolt ons. We installed our Stage 3 package which you can read about HERE That setup made 400hp on 93 octane and 436 on E85 using the Johnson Tuning flex fuel kit. The sti and pre '15 wrx are very reliable save for one thing, the engine. The ej255/257 they have been using for 10+ years is prone to piston/ringland issues. Other than that you have your typical subaru suspension bushing wear, thin paint, creaky interior, etc. Also the sti 6 speed tranny is bulletproof but the wrx 5 speed is not.

I think it is. If you really want to blow the roof off the thing, you might as well start with a good baseline. Bigger engine/turbo, better/customizable differential, stiffer suspension, looks sexy as fuck.(I don't care for the 2015 wrx.)Even considering my slight bias against the WRX, on paper STI just flat out wins.
It also means you don't have to do those mods just to get it on par and probably void your warranty(I know the rules, extensive mods are definitely gonna hinder your ability to utilize your warranty regardless.) Also, you would have to spend well beyond the difference in cost just to upgrade a WRX to be on par. Or you can look up anyone doing a fully built wrx($15k+) and see them hitting around 400-450 awhp at the dyno(not that high compared to other fully built engines and cars).
If this guy wants to all out then why not get an STI? He could get a smaller engine on a strange looking car with other weaker parts, or he could get an STI.This guy is obviously talking hypothetically so of course the question is how far he would push it. Of course you can make a great car out of a wrx, but getting an STI up front saves money. Finding a fully built FA20DIT would be very difficult at this point unless they are manufacturing their own forged internals.
Provide a link to a 2015 WRX with fully forged internals, a new bigger turbo, tune, E85 conversion making only 400HP and I will shut up. Cobb made 315HP with just a TGV delete, TBE and new intercooler. Explain that one. Also, have you ever heard of the AMG CLA45? It makes 355 HP on a 2.0 liter engine - STOCK. Smaller platforms are becoming more and more common making the same, if not better, power than older bigger engines because of the newer tech (direct injection being the main culprit).Sure, I agree the STI has a slight advantage over the WRX in handling for this gen, however the gap has closed mightily.
Having driven both, I find the WRX handles pretty darn close to the STI at this point. The diff setup is an advantage for the STI, so if you are looking for that, then yes, go for the STI. However, don't come in here when you are clearly lacking knowledge of the newer platform and have nothing useful to add. Also, do you not realize the 2015 WRX and STI are the exact same body style? Literally.the same. The simple matter(which I stated before) is that if he is spending the money, an STI as a platform will outperform a WRX when upgraded.
And we're not just talking raw power. Although 100+ whp over stock is pretty incredible(almost unbelievable), which is what you have suggested. And just the fact that their is a lack of options for upgrading internals adds to my point. When modding both cars you'll have a higher ceiling with the STI, even with the dinosaur engine. And yes, the wing makes the car look 10x less like a corolla.Edit: Just going to add that there are too many variables to this hypothetical that seems to be asked by someone who has no plans on buying either car. I never said the transmission was bad or has problems, it's actually shaping up to be an excellent transmission.
400-450 whp however far exceeds it's engineered power tollerance and WILL cause mechanical failure.Edit: to dumb it down, the transmission in the WRX is designed by the engineers to handle power up to a certain point. The STI is given a much more durable transmission because it is designed to be a track ready car. People spend all their money on power increasing mods and get mad when they rip out a gearbox or snap an axle.
